KATHMANDU: Prem Suwal, a member of the Nepal Workers Peasants Party (NWPP), has requested the government to immediately inform the Parliament about the oppression of meter usury victims and microfinance victims.

He stated that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha should appear in Parliament and explain why the police used batons to oppress meter usury victims and microfinance victims.

Speaking at a House of Representatives meeting on Tuesday, MP Suwal urged them not to do so, claiming that the government is infringing on the right to free expression and peaceful assembly guaranteed by the constitution.

He also pressured the government to immediately address the demands of meter usury victims and microfinance victims. MP Suwal said, ‘Meter interest victims gathered in Kathmandu Ratnapark and microfinance loan victims gathered in Inaruwa are mentioned in the constitution as a violation of the right to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly. It is necessary to ask the Prime Minister and the Home Minister to clarify in the Parliament about the lathis that happened even in the peaceful assembly of the people. It is necessary to meet the demands of the people who suffer from meter interest and microfinance loans.’

MP Suwal underlined that the government is not serious about meeting the victims’ needs.
