Kathmandu tops the list of polluted cities in the world (photos included)
The city's air quality index has hit 183.
KATHMANDU: Kathmandu now ranks first in the world in terms of air pollution.
According to the IQ Air index, which monitors the amount of air pollution in cities around the world, the level of air quality in Kathmandu hit 208 on Sunday.
Similarly, the Thai city of Chiang Mai comes in second place.
The city’s air quality index has hit 183.
Nepal was ranked first in the morning, and Chiang Mai, Thailand, rose from second to first in the afternoon.
There is more pollution in places like Shankha Park, Bhainsepati, Khumaltar, Ratnapark, Kirtipur in Kathmandu Valley.
The Department of Environment said atmospheric pollution has increased across the country including in the Kathmandu Valley due to the bush fires, leading to unhealthy air in Nepal since some days.
Even the plane couldn’t take off in the morning. The flight restarted just after noon.
People with health vulnerabilities are at risk when the AQI is more than 50 and it is hazardous to all people when it is more than 100. Air with measurement of AQI from 51 to 100 is considered normal while the air with AQI above this is considered unhealthy. AQI above 300 is highly hazardous, it is said.
