New variant of COVID-19’s Omicron detected in Nepal

KATHMANDU: The new COVID-19 variant ‘XBB 1.16’ from Omicron has been confirmed in Nepal.
The new variant that has spread in neighboring India has now been confirmed in Nepal, according to the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP).
Private sequencing was performed on 24 samples collected in Chaith, and the Omicron variant was found in all 24.
Nine of the 24 people who have been confirmed to have COVID-19 have new variants.
There are currently 9 Omicron subvariants active in Nepal. The most recent discovery was XBB.1.16.
As the new variant spreads in India, the ministry announced that COVID-19 testing and masks will be made mandatory in border areas.
Furthermore, the ministry has requested that all levels be sensitive to increasing effective prevention and control roles as seasonal flu and COVID-19 infection are on the rise in Nepal.
