KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has called for a meeting with the protesting meter usury victims.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, he is scheduled to meet with meter interest victims in Baluwatar in the morning.
The victims are protesting after a 12-day walk from Mahottari’s Bardibas to Kathmandu, demanding justice following a sit-in.
The government has already decided to amend the Criminal Code law to combat widespread meter usury fraud in the Terai-Madhesh districts.
Although both parties agreed to amend the existing law to provide justice to victims and to establish a separate powerful committee in each district to take action against meter usury and handle complaints, the talks have not concluded.
Meter usury victims are hopeful that an agreement will be reached after meeting with Prime Minister today.
According to Manoj Kumar Paswan, the coordinator of the Struggle Against Meter Usury Committee, while the government has agreed to enact a law, the government team has yet to provide confidence on how to deal with previous incidents.
Meterbaj victims have asked for ten things, including the abolition of the Tamsuk system and the punishment of the perpetrators, the return of the moneylender’s illegal property to the name of the person from whom it came, and simple and easy bank loans.
