KATHMANDU: The newly elected President Ram Chandra Poudel will take the oath of office and secrecy today. The President’s office has prepared to organize a special ceremony for Poudel’s swearing-in at 1 pm.

President Poudel will take the oath of office. According to Nepal’s Constitution, the President must take the oath of office and secrecy before the Chief Justice before assuming his duties.
Poudel was elected President on March 9, 2009. He was elected by more than twice as many votes as his opponent, CPN-UML Vice President and former Speaker Subash Chandra Nemwang. Poudel received 33,802 votes in the election, while Nemwang received 15,518 votes.
The constitution states that there will be a president in Nepal, and that the president will promote Nepalese national unity. The President’s primary responsibility will be to uphold and protect the Constitution.
The practice of the presidential system in Nepal began with the establishment of a republic as a result of the 2062/63 movement.
According to the constitution, the President’s term of office is five years from the date of his election, and a person who has been elected President twice cannot run for re-election.
