KATHMANDU: Holi, the festival of color, is being celebrated with a huge fanfare in the hilly region of the country on Monday (today) and Tuesday (tomorrow) in Terai districts.

This festival is traditionally celebrated as a symbol of the triumph of truth over falsehood, as well as a festival of family and social unity.

Holi is celebrated by donning various colors and abir (colors). It is also a color festival. This festival is celebrated in Basantapur, Kathmandu, along with the rest of the country, through a variety of programs.

According to legend, fire-resistant Holika sacrificed herself and her son Prahlad to Lord Bishnu for his religious devotion. However, her son Prahlad was unharmed, whereas Holika was burned to death for inflicting injustice on her son. Since then, Hindus have celebrated Holi as the victory of justice over injustice.

This festival is celebrated by people of all ages in groups. The children been found to have enhanced the festival by playing pichkaris (water gun).

Holi is celebrated by people of all religions because it promotes social harmony. Various festivals held in Nepal, a beautiful country with multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-religious, and multi-cultural characteristics, are thought to maintain strong social unity.

The President, Prime Minister, and top leaders of political parties have extended greetings on the occasion of Phagu Purnima.

President Bidyadevi Bhandari while congratulating on the occasion of Phagu Purnima said that the festival will provide inspiration to protect and promote the original cultures by eradicating the existing various types of distortions, disharmony and evils.

In addition, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ said that each caste and religion have their own cultural significance and original traditions and festivals in the country and said that such original traditions, cultures and festivals lay the foundation stone of social harmony, unity and cooperation as well as represent national unity and independence.
