KATHMANDU: Gyalpo Lhosar, a cultural festival celebrated every year on the day of FalgunShukla Pratipada by the Sherpa community and Buddhists living in Himalayan districts, is being celebrated today with a variety of programs.

Today, the Sherpa community celebrating the 2150th Gyalpo Lhosar as a new year. Rat, cow, tiger, rabbit, dragon (cloud), snake, horse, sheep, monkey, bird, dog, and boar are the 12 categories of Gyalpo Lhosar.

The years that begin with the Rat end up to twelve years. From today, the year of the tiger has ended and the year of the rabbit has begun. Gyalpo Lhosar is celebrated for 15 days by the Sherpa community in Nepal’s Himalayan region.

Gyalpo Lhosar has been celebrated as a spring festival since the time of Ude Gungyal, the ninth king of Bhote. In the past, Gyalpo Lhosar was celebrated in 12 districts of the Himalayan region but now it is celebrated in 22 districts. With the migration of Sherpas, the number of districts celebrating this festival has increased.

On the Dec 30, the Gurung community celebrates Tamu and the day of Magh Shukla Pratipada, the Tamang community also celebrates this festival in the name of Sonam Lhosar.

The government has granted a public holiday to Gyalpo Lhosar today.
