Gyalpo Lhosar today, a public holiday
The Sherpa community is celebrating the 2150th Gyalpo Lhosar as a new year.
KATHMANDU: Gyalpo Lhosar, a cultural festival celebrated by the Sherpa community every year on the day of Falgun Shukla Pratipada, is being celebrated today by organizing various programs.

Gyalpo Lhosar has been divided into 12 classes, namely Rat, Cow, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog and Barah. Gyalpo Lhosar is celebrated grandly by organizing various programs from February New Moon to Full Moon.
Gyalpo started to be celebrated under the name of Spring Festival from the time of Ude Gungyal, the ninth king of Lhosar Bhot. Researcher Tika Sherpa told about the name Gyalpo Lhosar. He also informed that this Lhosar is pronounced by some as Galpo and by others as Galbo.
Gyalpo Lhosar, which was celebrated in 12 districts of the Himalayan region in the past, is currently celebrated in 22 districts. With the migration of the Sherpa tribe, the district celebrating this festival has increased.
The Gurung community celebrated Tamu on Dec 30, and the Tamang community celebrated Sonam Lhosar on the day of Magh Shukla Pratipada. The government has declared today a public holiday in honor of Lhochar.
