KATHMANDU: Today, National Democracy Day is being celebrated across the country with various programs.

On 2007 Falgun 7 (18 Feb, 1951), this day was started to commemorate the end of the rule of Jahanian Rana and the establishment of democracy.

The government has given a public holiday today. Democracy was re-established on the 2046 Chaitra 26 (8 April , 1990) on the foundation of Falgun 7 (Feb 18).

On the foundation of this, democracy was achieved on 2063 Baisakh 11 (24 April, 2006). In this background, on 2065 Jestha 15 (28 May, 2008), the First Constituent Assembly established Nepal as a federal democratic republic country.

The Second Constituent Assembly announced and implemented the constitution on 2072 Ashoj 3 (20 Sept, 2015). It is specially celebrated as the foundation of all changes is Democracy Day on Falgun 7 (Feb 18).

Expressing good wishes on the occasion of the day, President Bidya Devi Bhandari said that the economic prosperity of the country should be made the main goal of the future. She said that the significance of Democracy Day can be confirmed if democratic conduct can be made a way of life based on the belief that the entire source of state power is the citizen.

Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun has urged all parties to preserve and protect the achievements of the movement that took place after the attainment of democracy.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said that it is a national responsibility to lay the foundation stone of a socialist-oriented state through the progressive implementation of the Constitution. He mentioned that the present government is firmly committed to change the condition of the citizens in accordance with the changed political system by advancing towards the goal of social justice, good governance and prosperity.

On the occasion of the day, top leaders of various political parties have also expressed their wishes.

Similarly, the former king Gyanendra Shah also expressed his best wishes and mentioned that the political party and the royal institution, which has a long patriotic historical heritage, should not delay for cooperation with mutual trust.
