KATHMANDU: The preliminary report on Yeti Airlines’ plane crash on Magh 1 (Jan 15) in Pokhara has been released.

A five-member inquiry commission led by former secretary Nagendra Ghimire issued the report.

The report mentions a change in command following a problem with the plane prior to the crash. According to the report, Captain Anju Khatiwada was sitting in the main command seat on the left side. A trainee, Captain Kamal KC, was on the right side.

However, after receiving the danger signal, Anju handed over control of the aircraft to KC at 10:57:18 AM. In that situation, pilot Anju also informed KC that the engine had no power. The crash killed 68 people, including four crew members.

The Air Traffic Controller (ATC) provided runway 30 for the plane to land, as stated in the report. However, the crew requested runway 12. ATC then granted permission to land at 12.

An attempt to land from runway 12 on the north side of the runway was made at 10:51 a.m. At 10:56, the pilots maintained the plane’s fan at a 15-degree angle.

The plane’s landing gear was also opened in preparation for landing on the runway. Anju, the pilot in command, had inquired whether the plane would continue to fly to the left. Trainee pilot instructed to continue.  When Khatiwada asked if the plane should go down, KC said it wasn’t necessary and told her to apply a little more power.

Finally, Khatiwada delegated complete control of the aircraft to the trainer KC.

The committee mentioned that the study is still ongoing.
