KATHMANDU: The preliminary report on the plane crash of Yeti Airlines that happened in Pokhara on Magh 1 (Jan 15) has been published.
The 5-member inquiry commission formed under the chairmanship of former secretary Nagendra Ghimire has released the report. The report mentions the change of command after the plane had a problem before the plane crashed.
According to the report, Captain Anju Khatiwada was sitting in the main command seat i.e. the seat on the left side. Trainee Captain Kamal KC was sitting on the right side.
However, Anju handed over the control of the aircraft to KC at 10:57:18 AM after receiving the danger signal.
In that situation, pilot Anju also told KC that there was no power in the engine. 72 people including 4 crew died in the accident.
As mentioned in the report, the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) provided runway 30 for the plane to land. But the crew asked for runway 12. Then ATC gave permission to land at 12. At 10:51 in the morning, an attempt was made to land from runway 12 on the north side of the runway. At 10:56, the pilots kept the plane’s fan at a position of 15 degrees. The landing gear of the plane was also opened for landing on the runway. Anju, who was in the main command of the plane, had asked whether the plane would be taken to the left continuously. Trainee pilot instructed to continue. When Khatiwada asked whether the plane should go down or not, KC said that it was not necessary and instructed to apply a little more power. In the end, Khatiwada handed over the entire command of the aircraft to the trainer KC.
The committee mentioned that the study is still ongoing.
