7 police officers killed in Peru jungle ambush

LIMA: At least seven police officers were killed on Saturday after being ambushed in the jungle area of the valley of the rivers of Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro (Vraem), the Peruvian National Police (PNP) said.

“We regret the loss of our police brothers, who were ambushed while moving in a police vehicle in the town of Natividad in the #Vraem. 7 troops died and one police officer survived,” the PNP tweeted.

The incident occurred in Natividad in the southeastern Peruvian province of La Convencion, according to local press reports.

Among the dead were agents of the National Directorate of Special Operations and Natividad police officers, according to the Peruvian news network Radio Programas del Peru.

Meanwhile, local newspaper La Republica reported that the attackers allegedly shot at the driver of the truck who lost control “and then shot at the soldiers who were in the back.”

In a video published on its website, a white vehicle overturned on the side of the road with several bullet holes in it, while the bodies were laid on the road.
