NRB’s first governor Himalaya Shamsher Rana passed away

KATHMANDU: Himalaya Shamsher Rana, the first governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, died.

Family sources said Rana, 95, Nepal’s first Finance Secretary breathed his last this morning while undergoing treatment at Norvic international Hospital in Thapathali, Kathmandu. Rana has long been afflicting from pneumonia and pulmonary complications.

He was admitted to the hospital for treatment some days ago.

From 2013 Baisakh 14 to 2017 Magh 25, he was the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank and a secretary in the Ministry of Finance established after the change in 2007.

Similarly, from 1962 to 1986, he worked for the United Nations in various countries before establishing Gorkha Brewery in Nepal in 1987.

And in 1993, he established Himalayan Bank Limited in a joint venture with Pakistan’s Habib Bank and became its chairperson.

He has also served as the Chairperson of Nirdhan Utthan Bank and Lumbini General Insurance, and he is currently the Chief Advisor on the Board of Directors of Himalayan Bank.

Rana will be cremated at the Pashupati Aryaghat today. He is survived by two sons and two daughters.
