KATHMANDU: A demonstration was held today at Maitighar Mandala demanding justice for Ganesh Damai (Pariyar), who died on Jan 11 in Ramechhap’s Dhobi.
“Serial attacks, rape, violence, and killings of the Dalit community as of ethnicity and poverty are not only a violation of the Constitution of the State of Nepal, laws, political commitments, and international laws, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, conventions, treaties, and so on,” some Dalit rights activists protested today, saying that human rights and civil rights are under threat.
Pariyar, who was a residence of 5 Payabot (Dhobi) of Likhu Tamakoshi Rural Municipality of Ramechhap District, was discovered dead on the evening of Jan 11.
He was initially thought to have committed suicide. However, Dalit activists claim that Pariyar was murdered rather than committed suicide.
According to Dalit activists, Pradeep Tamang, a 50-year-old resident of the same area, accused him of brutally beating and kicking him to death on the road in front of his house.
They demand that the government conduct a thorough investigation into this matter.
