KATHMANDU: The police have taken a statement from Upendra Mahato, the founding chair of the Non-Resident Nepali Association, in the case of the death of Prem Prasad Acharya, who set himself on fire by sprinkling petrol on himself last Tuesday.

The police took a statement from Mahato after the family members of Acharya, who set himself on fire a few days ago in front of the Federal Parliament building in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu, accused him of ‘inciting suicide’.

Chief and Senior Superintendent of Police Dan Bahadur Karki of District Police Complex Kathmandu took a statement from businessman Mahato on Tuesday.

According to him, based on the letter written by Acharya on social media before the self-immolation, Police mentioned that businessman Mahato and the Nepal Gramodhyog Company, which he was operating, returned the ghee after the expiry of the deadline and did not withdraw the money.

The police took a statement from businessman Mahato after Charya mentioned that his company had to pay the remaining arrears due to the return of ghee after the deadline.

Following Acharya’s death, his wife filed a police report against the business organization and its representatives regarding financial transactions.

After a complaint was lodged against 12 people belonging to various business groups and directors in the complaint, the police started taking statements in a hurry. On Monday, a statement was taken from the owner of Bhatbhateni Super Markets, Meen Bahadur Gurung.
