KATHMANDU: Holi, the festival of colors, began with the installation of a chir (bamboo pole) decorated with colorful cloths at Basantapur’s Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square.

The festival of color, Holi formally begins all over the country including Kathmandu Valley with the erection of Chir on Falgun Shukla Ashtami in Basantapur.

The tradition of celebrating Holi festival in Kathmandu Valley today, ie from the beginning of the month of Falgun Shukla Ashtami to the month of Falgun Shukla Purnima, remains.

When rags were thrown in Basantapur, those present there exchanged happiness by dyeing different colors. In addition, cheers were also raised from Guruju’s platoon.

This year, the government has given a public holiday to celebrate Holi on Falgun 22 (March 6) in hilly districts including Kathmandu Valley and on Falgun 23 (March 7) in Terai districts.

It is a tradition that the Holi festival ends in the valley after the colorful three-tiered cloth, which is made on the eighth day of Falgun Shukla Ashtami, is taken to Tundikhel on the night of the full moon of Falgun.
