Presidential Election: Nomination Registration Today

KATHMANDU: Nominations for the presidential election are being registered on Saturday. This is the third presidential election after the promulgation of the Constitution of Nepal 2072.

Nominations will be registered at the Lhotse Hall of the International Convention Center at New Baneshwor, Kathmandu. The Office of the Election Officer of the President and Vice President has stated that nominations will be registered between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Election Officer Mahesh Sharma Paudel informed that the list of candidates whose nomination papers have been registered will be published today.

To be a candidate for the post of President, one must be a Nepali citizen based on descent, at least 45 years old, and one’s name must be included in the last voter list of a rural municipality or municipality. According to the Presidential and Vice Presidential Election Act 2074, a person who is not disqualified by federal law and who is not holding any position of profit will be allowed to run for the post of President.

However, the persons who are in the positions filled by elected and nominations are eligible to be candidates. Election Officer Paudel informed that immediately after the election of the President, the post nominated or elected in the past will become vacant.

There should be five proposers and five supporters while registering nominations for the post of President. In the presidential election, the person whose name is in the voter list issued by the election officer must be the proposer and supporter.

According to the election schedule published by the Election Commission, there is a program to file complaints against the candidates on Sunday, Feb 26. The election officer’s office will investigate the complaint against the candidate and make a decision on Monday, Feb 27.

Candidates will withdraw their names on Tuesday Feb 28 and the final list of candidates will be published on the same day.

According to the election schedule of the commission, voting for the president will be held on March 9 from 10 am to 3 pm. The commission is preparing to start the counting of votes from 4 pm and announce the results by 7 pm on the same day.
