KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has laid a wreath at Kathmandu’s Shahid Pillar.
Prime Minister Prachanda attended the Martyrs’ Day program organized by Kathmandu Metropolitan City and laid wreaths at the Shahid Pillar.
The event was attended by Kathmandu Metropolitan Mayor Balen Shah, political party leaders, government employees, security personnel, and others.
Martyrs’ Day is observed every year to remember the brave sons and daughters who gave their lives in the democratic revolution and democratic people’s movements against Jahanian Rana’s rule, the autocratic panchayat system, and dictatorial monarchy in order to make the Nepali people sovereign citizens.
Martyr’s day is celebrated on account of heroic martyr Shukraraj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dashrath Chand and Gangalal Shrestha’s struggle life and sacrifice and contribution of other warriors of democratic movement.
Every year from the Magh 10 to Magh 16 (Jan 24-30), ‘Martyrs Week’ is observed in memory of the valiant martyrs who gave their lives in opposition to the autocratic Jahanian Rana regime. Martyr’s Day is observed on Magh 16 (Jan 30).
On 1997 Magh 10, Shukraraj, who established the Nepal People’s Council against the autocratic Rana regime and inspired the people to revolutionize for their rights, was killed by hanging from a khari tree in Teku.
