KATHMANDU: CPN (UML)’s Nanda Gurung has been elected Speaker of the Karnali State. With this, Gurung, who was from the ruling coalition partners, has become the first female Speaker in the State.

The third meeting the first session of the State Assembly (SA) elected her with majority votes.

Senior most members in the SA, Hikmat Bahadur Bista, who chaired the meeting, did so through voting as per Rule 7 (6) of the Karnali State Assembly Regulation, 2079. Out of the total 40 SA members, 38 were present in the voting, and of them, 24 cast their vote for Gurung.

Her nearest rival Khadga from the Nepali Congress garnered 14 votes.

She was elected as a member in the SA from Surkhet under proportional representation.
