KATHMANDU: The Speaker of Gandaki State will be elected on Jan 16. The speaker should be elected within 15 days of the first meeting, according to the constitution.

Since Jan 16 is the 15th day, the Parliament Secretariat has informed that the Speaker election will take place on the same day. However, it will not be decided until after the Feb 12 meeting. Some have proposed holding the Speaker election before January 16.

The speaker of Gandaki is a Maoist, and the deputy speaker is a member of the UML, according to the general consensus. There is currently debate over who will be the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The Maoists are expected to nominate Gorkha MP Krishna Dhital for the Speakership.

But the Maoist leaders have said that he has expressed his desire to go to the government. ‘We have asked him to become the speaker. But he is not interested. He has said that he will go and work in the government,’ said a leader, ‘If he does not become, there is a possibility of Sushila Sinkhada.’

Sushila also belongs to Gorkha. She was elected proportionally. It is said that UML’s Padya GC or Yashoda Rimal is more likely to be the Deputy Speaker.
