KATHMANDU: Protesters lit lanterns at Maitighar Mandla on Sunday as part of their indefinite sit-in and relay fast demanding justice for Banke’s Nirmala Kurmi.
The demonstration included Satyagrahi doctor Govind KC, social activists Bimal Aryal, Nirgha Naveen, and others.
Women’s Rights Forum Banke, which announced the third phase of the movement on Dec 29, has been walking from Kalanki to Maitighar every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
According to the stage’s Chair, Rubi Khan, the stage and the victim’s family resumed their protest after the Banke police conducted a cursory investigation into Nirmala Kurmi’s kidnapping, disappearance, body hostage, and murder case.
After a 43-day sit-in and protest, the government formed an inquiry committee on the issue last year through negotiations.
Following the arrest of the accused in the case and the submission of a report to the government for investigation, the police are now detaining six people and investigating, with one elderly person detained.
Instead of arresting Badshah Kurmi, the main accused in the case, the platform has accused the police of protecting him. In the recently concluded elections, Badshah Kurmi was elected as a state MP on behalf of the Nepali Congress from Banke Constituency No. 3 (A).
