Tokha’s Chaku business, who used to be leisurely, are now busy making Chaku.

They are now more busy as a result of the increased demand for Tokha’s Chaku from various cities around the world where Nepalis live.

During this season, Tokha alone produces approximately 5 lakh kg of Chaku. That is more than 70% of the Chaku demanded in Nepal during Maghe Sankranti.

Chaku is a Newari dish made with concentrated sugarcane juice, jaggery, ghee, and nuts. The mixture is either cooked in a shallow dish and sliced into small diamond-shaped pieces, or it is heated until solid and then pulled on a hook in a manner similar to making taffy and cut into small rolls.

Chaku are also made in Harsiddhi, Bhaktapur, Patan, Kirtipur, and other areas of the Kathmandu Valley. Tokha, on the other hand, meets more than 80% of the valley’s demand for Chaku. Tokha currently has 11 large and small traditional Chaku-making factories.

In which more grandson entrepreneurs have taken up the father’s profession. They are still producing knives with the same taste using technology from 100 years ago.
