SURKHET: Surkhet Birendranagar’s middle market is in the process of replacing old clocks with Ghantaghar (clock tower) clocks.

Birendranagar Municipality has installed a new clock at a cost of around 12 lakhs to bring the clocks back into service after being closed for about 12 years.

Birendranagar Municipality has begun work in collaboration with the Surkhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry to reactivate the clocks of Ghantaghar, which have been inactive for a long time. Because the old clocks in the vicinity of the Ghantaghar cannot be repaired, clocks are being brought from a clock company in Hyderabad, India, and the work is being completed.

The clock connection work, which began about a week ago, has been completed. The watch will be operational in a few days, according to Narahari Tiwari, chief administrative officer.

According to him, the Birendranagar Municipality, which has taken responsibility for the protection of the Ghantaghar, the historical heritage of the Birendranagar Municipality, brought new clocks from India and began installing them on Friday.

The technical team replaced the old clocks brought from Japan during the construction of the Ghantaghar in 2045 with new clocks in order to install a new clock.

The hour hand of the Ghantaghar, which was built with Chinese government assistance in 2045, has been stopped for 12 years. Ghantaghar’s time made it easy for locals to guess the time.

Locals say until about 12 years ago, whenever the bell rang in Ghantaghar, the tune would also play and the hands of the clock would move. Locals complained that the Ghantaghar’s identity had been lost when the Ghantaghar’s hands were closed. After the new clock is installed in the Ghantaghar, the tune will be heard there in its original form.

Since it is located in Birendranagar’s middle market, you can see most of Birendranagar from the top floor of the Ghantaghar.

Birendranagar Municipality has devised a strategy to protect landmarks such as the Ghantaghar, as well as the installation of a new clock in the Ghantaghar.
