The Gurung community celebrates Tamu Lhosar as New Year. The Gurung community celebrates this festival grandly by bidding farewell to ‘To Lho’ (Tiger class) and welcoming ‘Hi Lho’ (Cat class).
On this day, the Gurung community celebrates the new year by donning costumes and eating new foods. The festival ‘Tamu Lhosar’ is associated with the sun’s rays.
This festival is celebrated on Dec 30 in many districts of Nepal where the Gurung community predominates because the heat of the sun comes first.
Along with the Gurung, Tamang, Sherpa, and other mountain communities in Nepal celebrate the Lhosar festival.
The name of Lhosar, on the other hand, is different
The Tamangs celebrate Lhosar as Sonam Lhosar, while the Sherpa community celebrates Gyalbo Lhosar.
The government has declared a public holiday today on the occasion of Tamu Lhosar.
