KATHMANDU: FIFA World Cup (FWC) winner France midfielder Blaise Matuidi has announced his retirement from football.

Matuidi, 35, announced his retirement via social media on Friday. With his contract set to expire on Dec 31, he has confirmed that he will be hanging up his boots for good.He was an important member of France’s World Cup-winning squad in 2018.

Former Juventus and PSG midfielder last played for Inter Miami.

Matuidi scored nine goals in 84 games for France.

He made his French national team debut in 2010.

“Football, I loved you so much. Football, you gave me so much, but the time has come to say stop,” Matuidi wrote on Twitter. “I’ve achieved my dreams as a child, as a man. It’s with a lump in my throat that I’m turning the page now.”
