LASHKAR GAH, AFGHANISTAN: One child has been confirmed dead and six others injured as an explosive device went off in the Hawza-e-Sayedan area of Gereshk district of Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province on Tuesday, provincial director of information and culture Hafiz Rashid said Wednesday.

The official told reporters that the blast took place after the ill-fated children found a toy-like device and began playing with it but suddenly it exploded, killing one on the spot and injuring six others, some in critical condition.

Afghanistan has been regarded as one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world as countless unexploded devices left over from the past decades of war occasionally claim the lives of Afghans, mostly innocent children, officials said.
