KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Sunday unveiled a full-length statue of the former president of Nepali Congress (NC), the planner of the Melamchi water supply project, former Prime Minister Late Krishna Prasad Bhattarai at the site of the Melamchi water supply project tunnel located in Sundarijal.

When Melamchi’s drinking water is brought to Kathmandu, the streets of Kathmandu can be washed and late Bhattarai’s expression at the time, who envisioned this project, became well-known.

The study began in 2029 in order to avoid a drinking water shortage in Kathmandu. Melamchi project was identified in 2041.

In the year 2049, it was discovered that by combining the water of the Yangri and Larke rivers with Melamchi, 51 million liters of water could be distributed daily in Kathmandu.

The Melamchi Mine Water Development Committee was formed in 2055 to begin construction on this project.

After 22 years of construction, the Asian Development Bank, the project’s major donor, finally succeeded in releasing water into Kathmandu’s Sundarijal in February 2077.

This project, which was included on the government’s list of projects of national pride, was barely completed in 22 years after overcoming numerous obstacles as a sick project.

However, in Chaitra (March/April) 2077, Melamchi’s water began to be distributed in Kathmandu’s streams.

During the first phase, 17 million liters of water were delivered daily to Kathmandu. Work is underway to bring 170 million more cubic meters of water from the second phase of this project by combining water from the Yangri and Larke rivers. More than 35 billion rupees have been invested in the project.
