KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has committed to make a law to give voting rights to Nepalis abroad.
Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya made this commitment during a press conference on Nov 20 to announce the final results of the House of Representatives (HoR) and State Assembly (SA) elections. There are eight laws. Now it becomes one.
‘There are numerous factors at play,’ Thapaliya explained. Thapaliya has promised that the new law will address issues such as voting by Nepalese voters living abroad, deciding the date of the election by the EC itself, and delegating voter education to the local level.
According to him, the EC intends to introduce the Unified Act (Bill) on Elections as soon as the new Parliament convenes.
