MUMBAI: India’s southwestern state of Karnataka has detected its first case of Zika virus, local media said Tuesday.

According to Karnataka’s health minister, a five-year-old girl from the state’s Raichur district has tested positive for the Zika virus.

“This is the first case in the state and the government is monitoring the situation very carefully,” Karnataka’s health minister K Sudhakar was quoted as saying.

The minister said the government was taking all necessary measures and there was no need for worry.

Cases of Zika virus were reported in Kerala, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh recently.

Zika virus is mostly spread by mosquitoes. In India, the first outbreak of the virus was reported in Gujarat in 2017.

The World Health Organization says although Zika causes only mild symptoms in most people, it sometimes causes complications including microcephaly and Guillain-Barre syndrome.
