KATHMANDU: Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus has undergone surgery on a knee injury that has forced him to withdraw from the World Cup, Arsenal announced on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old was withdrawn midway through the second half of Brazil’s match against Cameroon last Friday, and initial reports suggested he would only be out for three weeks – the rest of the World Cup.

The Premier League champions, Arsenal, have not stated how long the striker will be out.

According to an Arsenal statement: “Gabby’s rehabilitation program will now begin. Everyone at the club is rooting for Gabby and will work tirelessly to get him back on the field as soon as possible.”

Brazil advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals on Monday with a 4-1 victory over South Korea.
