KATHMANDU: Morocco reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time with a historic victory over former world champion Spain.

Morocco reached the quarter-finals for the first time after defeating Spain in a penalty shootout by 3-0 on Tuesday night at the Education City Stadium.

All Spanish players missed the penalty shootout. Pablo Sarabia, Carlos Soler, Sergio Busquets had a shot that failed.

Morocco’s Abdelhamid Sabiri, Hakim Ziyech,Achraf Hakimi hit the post. Badr Benoun missed the shot.

After neither team scored in the allotted time, the game was extended to extra time. After no goals were scored in extra time, the game was decided by penalty.

Morocco made it to the knockout round for the first time since 1994. They will now face Portugal in the quarter-finals.
