KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has directed that the work of counting votes in Udayapur Constituency No. 1 be resumed.

The EC directed the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of Udaipur to proceed with the vote counting based on the agreement reached prior to the vote counting on Monday.

In a letter issued by Rishiram Aryal, Deputy Secretary of the Commission, it is stated that ‘…in this regard, the relevant Chief Electoral Officer shall be instructed to proceed with the counting work based mostly on the agreement reached prior to the counting of votes.’

Furthermore, the Commission has decided to proceed with the vote counting in accordance with the Commission’s letter dated Nov 20 as a result of double voting from one system’s poll paper.

The counting of votes in the House of Representatives was halted on Sunday due to a dispute that arose after more than 100 poll papers from the State Assembly were discovered. The CPN-UML demanded re-voting, while the Nepali Congress demanded that votes be counted as soon as possible.

Dr. Narayan Khadka of Nepali Congress (NC) and Manju Kumari Chaudhary of CPN-UML are contesting on behalf of the power alliance in Udayapur Constituency No. 1.
