KATHMANDU: Toshima Karki, a surgeon by profession, is a National Independent Party candidate for Lalitpur-3. She was raised in Nakkhu, Lalitpur, and holds an MBBS from KIST Medical College as well as an MS (Masters in Surgery) from Kathmandu University. She has also served as an executive member of the Nepal Medical Council.

In public, she is a staunch supporter and helper of Satyagrahi Dr. Govinda KC, and has been involved in KC’s medical education reform campaign since its inception. She was also fighting a legal battle at the time. The Supreme Court issued some directives regarding medical education reform in the case filed under her leadership.

She was a teacher at the Patan Institute of Health Sciences when she was nominated as a member of the House of Representatives on Nov 20. She says that she advocates ‘good medical practice’ in her profession.

She said that she wants to become a member of the House of Representatives to increase the pressure for policy-making of ‘good practice’ in all areas of national life. In Lalitpur-3, where Dr. Karki has contested, CPN (Maoist Center) and CPN (UML) leaders-activists are commenting that he has come to collect votes.

She is ignoring her competitors’ comments and requesting votes in order to win the youth rather than the parties and their leaders, including the Maoist Center, UML, which has been tested.

Following receipt of a petition against Dr. Karki, the Election Commission canceled his candidacy at the petitioner’s request. He was accused of running for office without resigning as a member of the Medical Council’s executive committee.

However, the Supreme Court ruled that the executive member of the Medical Council is not a position of profit. Dr. Karki’s statement that she had already asked the Election Commission whether the post of a member of the council was beneficial or not, but after not getting an answer, she became a candidate, was made public.

She appealed to the Supreme Court against the commission’s decision and obtained an order preventing the commission’s decision from being implemented. However, the Election Commission appealed the order to the Supreme Court once more.

However, nothing happened, and while no final decision has been made on her case, the Supreme Court has made it clear that receiving allowance as a council member is not a position of benefit. Of course, Karki is well-known in the country and abroad as a result of the Election Commission’s work.

She is well-known both in the country and abroad.
