Silence period to start from midnight today, 25,000 fine for violating the silence period rules

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has directed the Election Code of Conduct Monitoring Committee to strictly enforce the silent period’s rules and code of conduct.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dinesh Prasad Thapaliya stated that such instructions were issued at a meeting of the Central Election Code of Conduct Monitoring Committee.

The Election Offenses and Punishment Act mandates a 48-hour period of silence beginning two days before the polling day. During this time, the commission has asked that everyone follow the code of conduct.

What should not be done during the silent period?

‘No one shall call or organize a meeting, take out a procession, raise slogans, or in any other way for the purpose of voting for or against any candidate or political party from 48 hours before the day of voting until the counting of votes is completed,’ the rules state. It must not be spread or caused.’

Those who break this rule, according to CEC Thapaliya, will be fined 25,000 rupees.

Tthe Commission’s CEC held a press conference in the EC on Thursday and urged everyone to fulfill their responsibilities from their respective locations in order to complete the elections on Nov 20 in a civilized manner.
