KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Constituency No. 4 is being closely watched in the upcoming elections. The main contenders are Nepali Congress (NC) General Minister Gagan Kumar Thapa and CPN-UML Politburo member Rajan Bhattarai. Everyone’s interest in this area has increased since Thapa announced himself as the next Prime Minister.

Both Thapa and Bhattarai are confident of winning the elections on Nov 20. Thapa, who previously defeated Bhattarai by a margin of 3,418 votes in the 2074 election, now claims that the alliance ensures his victory.

Bhattarai was supported in the 2074 elections by the left alliance UML and the Maoist Center. Thapa, on the other hand, has the support of the Maoist center and the CPN (Unified Socialist), which has split from the UML.

Thapa, the power coalition’s joint candidate, stated that his victory was assured while canvassing votes in Kapan on Wednesday. He claims that voter enthusiasm for him in previous elections remains unchanged.

“It is natural for voters to raise the issue of local infrastructure construction based on location, but it is a city that is under construction,” he said, adding that “the problems of roads and drainage in some areas have now been solved to a large extent.”

Thapa stated that voters in this region have expressed concerns about both local and national issues. “They talk about the country’s situation with the current election while interacting with them,” Thapa explained. He claims that if he wins the upcoming elections, he will run for the NC parliamentary party’s leadership.

He stated that his strategy includes the development of his constituency as well as what he will do if elected to lead the government. “When choosing the leader of the parliamentary party, you should run on the party’s manifesto,” he said.

Candidate Thapa stated that due to the ruling coalition’s election system, there is no option to remain with the coalition parties even after the election.

He emphasized the importance of assessing the capacity of the ruling coalition if a government is formed, saying, ‘If we fail to assess the capacity, even if we get a single majority in 2048, we may not be able to run the government.’ He added that even with a majority in the last election, the CPN-UML could not run the government.

Thapa stated that the NC will lead the government following the ruling coalition’s victory. Although the NC is the largest party in the country, it has its own set of rules, laws, and traditions. First and foremost, we must select the leader of our party.’
