KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has fixed the schedule today for registering nominations in Morang Constituency No. 3 (1). After the death of Shekhar Chandra Thapa, who was a candidate for Nepali Congress in Morang Constituency No. 3 (1) for the House of Representatives and State Assembly elections to be held on Nov 20, the Commission has fixed a new election program for the party’s candidates on Thursday with nomination registration.

Rishi Ram Bhusal, Deputy Secretary of the Commission, said that according to the new election schedule, the registration of candidature nominations, objections and final list will be published between Nov 10 & 11.

He said that while the final list of candidates for the House of Representatives and State Assembly elections to be held on Nov 20 has been published and the candidates have been given election symbols, since Thapa, the candidate for the State Assembly from that area, has died, only the candidates of the respective parties of that constituency can register their nominations. Candidate nominations will be registered by the respective political parties on Thursday from 10 am to 1 pm. The process will end after the election marks are given at 4 o’clock on Nov 11.

Who is the new candidate?

Sources said that there is a possibility that one of the outgoing MP Suryamaraj Rai and Parshu Karki of Shanishchara will become a candidate. Rai, who defeated the Left Alliance in the 2074 election and became a member of the State Assembly from the same region, was also the chief whip of the Congress parliamentary party.

This time too, when Rai was likely to be the candidate, Thapa became the candidate due to the reluctance of the party establishment. Along with Thapa, the regional committee of Congress at that time recommended the names of Rai, Parshu Karki and Sushil Rai. Sushil and Karki, who are currently in discussion, belong to the establishment side.

Some coalition party leaders have also started suggesting that it would be better if Maoist leader and Constituent Assembly member Lal Babu Susling Magar is nominated as a candidate because of the excessive internal contradictions in the Congress.
