KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has requested clarification from UML candidate Surya Bahadur Thapa.

The commission requested clarification after Thapa, a House of Representatives (HoR) candidate from the Pyuthan district, used children in his campaign.

The Commission is said to have received audio-visual material used by children. Clause (t) of sub-section (1) of Section 13 of the Election Code of Conduct, 2079 states that ‘children shall not be used or caused to be used in election campaigning, public meetings, or processions.’

According to reports, the commission has determined that Thapa’s use of children in his election campaign violates the code of conduct. ‘Since it appears that you have conducted election campaigning in a manner that is contrary to the Code of Conduct, please submit an explanation within 24 hours of receiving this letter by yourself or through your representative at the Election Commission or at the District Election Office Pyuthan,’ according to the Commission.

Even though you are aware that children should not be used in election campaigning, why should you not be prosecuted for violating the election code of conduct under subsections (3) and (4) of Section 23 of the Election Commission Act, 2073? Asked in clarification.
