KATHMANDU: A 94-year-old Iranian man, popularly called the “dirtiest man in the world” for not taking a shower for over fifty years has passed away, state media reported.

That person passed away at the age of 94. He had taken a bath for the first time in a decade only a few months before.

Amou Haji has been soap and water-free for over 50 years. Amou lived in the southern Iranian province of Fars. Even before that, the people of his village had asked him to take a bath, but he had avoided doing so.

According to local media, Amou Haji bowed to villagers’ pressure and cleaned his body with soap and water a few months ago. He became ill after taking a shower, according to Iran’s news agency IRNA, and died on Sunday.

He told the Tehran Times in 2014 that his favorite food is porcupine and that he lives in holes in the ground and huts built by villagers in Dejgah village.

In the interview, he stated that the bitter emotional experience he had as a child drove him to live such a life. Because he hadn’t bathed in decades, his skin was black and swollen with pus.

He ate rotten meat and drank dirty water from old oil cans, according to the Iranian news agency IRNA. He enjoyed smoking. In one photograph, he is seen sitting with several cigarettes in his mouth.

He used to get sad when people tried to bathe him or give him clean water to drink, according to the news agency.

However, there is some debate as to whether he could hold the record for going so long without showering.
