KATHMANDU: Rishi Sunak has been appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

King Charles III appointed Sunak, a member of the Conservative Party’s parliamentary party, as Prime Minister of Britain on Tuesday.

Sunak became Britain’s 57th Prime Minister. Sunak submitted his claim to form a government with King Charles at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, after being appointed as the party’s leader on Monday.

According to the BBC, King Charles then appointed Sunak as Prime Minister.

Sunak is the Conservative Party’s third Prime Minister in this Parliament’s history. Boris Johnson and Liz Truss were the previous Prime Ministers.

Previously, on September 6, Truss defeated Sunak in the party leader election and became Prime Minister, but she resigned after 44 days due to poor economic policies. The path to becoming Prime Minister became clear after Sunak emerged as the Conservative Party’s sole candidate for leadership.
