KATHMANDU: The fourth day of Tihar, Kartik Shukla Pratipada and Yama Panchak, is celebrated today by worshiping cows and giving sweet foods to eat. Cow worship has been practiced since Vedic Sanatan times. Cows are revered as cow mothers as their milk is as nutritious as mothers’ milk.
Modern science has also proven that cows are important as the energy of the local breed of cow is provided to people through milk, wheat, and cow dung. It is a religious belief that if cows are worshiped and fed sweet food on these days, their purity will always be obtained.
According to theologian Prof Ramchandra Gautam, there is a tradition of cow worship on the day of Kartik Krishna Aunsi in some parts of Nepal and in some communities, but there is a classical belief that cows should be worshiped at the end of Aunsi and at the beginning of Pratipada.
Every act performed by Vedic Sanatan Hindus includes the donation of a cow. In recent years, the decision has been interpreted as a lack of cows by putting money into a lack of cows. Cows are revered as cow mothers.
The cow is revered as a national animal. There is also a religious belief that if the Raksha Bandhan is tied to the cow’s tail after cow worship on the day of Shrawn Shukla Purnima, the cow will cross the river Vaitarani to go to heaven after death.
