KATHMANDU: Tihar, Hindui’s second-largest festival, has begun. There is a religious tradition of worshiping various creatures connected with nature and human life, which is celebrated for five days from Kartik Krishna Trayodashi to Kartik Shulk Dwitiya.

Kukur Tihar, also known as Naraka Chaturdashi, is observed on the second day of Yamapanchak, also known as Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi. Dogs are worshiped and fed their favorite food on this day. Hindus revere the dog not only as Yamaraj’s messenger but also as Bhairava’s vehicle.

According to Hindu scriptures, a dog will guard the door of salvation in Yamaloka until death. Dogs have always been helpful to humans since the dawn of civilization.

Dogs are now used not only as home guards, but also in criminal detection and high-level security operations. During the First and Second World Wars, dogs were used for a variety of tasks.
