CHITWAN: The goddess of charity, Maiya Devi Shrestha, has died. Maiya Devi Shrestha, a former Member of Parliament, died on Sunday at the age of 95 at her home in Bharatpur, according to her adopted son Tanka Nath Poudel.

Shrestha, the senior leader of the Nepali Congress, was recently ill with pneumonia. She was being treated at home by a team of health workers following her treatment at Chitwan Medical College Hospital. Maiya Devi, who is also unmarried, has given one billion rupees throughout the country, including Chitwan.

Former parliamentarian Shrestha, who received the Nepal Mother Award, is the patron of the Maiya Devi Kanya Campus in Bharatpur. Shrestha, who was born on Ashoj 5, 1985 in Bandipur, Tanahun, will be buried today, according to Nepali Congress Chairperson Rajeshwar Khanal.

Chairman Khanal stated that her body will be kept at the Congress party office in Kamalnagar from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, then at Maiya Devi Girls’ College, and finally at Devghat at 1 p.m. today.

Through a tweet, Nepali Congress Chairperson and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba expressed his shock at Maiya Devi’s death.
