DIG Basanta Kunwar appointed as election commander

KATHMANDU: The government has transferred Nepal Police AIG Sahkul Thapa. The government that changed the home secretary also changed the police election commander.

The cabinet meeting on Monday transferred Thapa, the Nepal Police election commander, as the election cell coordinator and gave him responsibility for the National Police Training Academy.

DIG Basanta Kunwar will now take over as Nepal Police’s election command.

The Police Headquarters is promoting massive police transfers as the Nov 20 election approaches. Thapa led the formation of a central election cell for the Nov 20 House of Representatives and State Assembly elections.

However, he was transferred before the work began. When DIG Kunwar arrived to take over the command, he was promoted to number one.

According to reports, the election commander was changed after Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand and Sher Bahadur Deuba expressed interest in the proposal. The government has also recently changed the home secretary.
