KATHMANDU: The Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) met with Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and drew their attention to the fact that, despite the fact that the House of Representatives five-year term is coming to an end, various laws governing communication have yet to be finalized.
Officials from the Federation met with him today at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar and asked him to take the initiative to finalize various communication laws, including the Media Council Bill, during the current session.
The Federation also stressed during the meeting that the communication-related laws currently under consideration in draft form should be press and freedom of expression friendly.
The federation has expressed its concern that since there is no communication law at present, various laws including the Electronic Transactions Act have been invoked to make journalists suffer.
On that occasion, Prime Minister Deuba instructed the Minister of Communication and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki by telephone to take initiatives to resolve the demands raised and put forward by the federation positively.
The meeting was attended by Chairperson Bipul Pokhrel, Senior Vice Chairperson Ramesh Bista, and General Secretary Roshan Puri.
The federation has also stated that it will meet with Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota and urge him to resolve the communication law issue before the end of the House of Representatives.
