KATHMANDU: Pradeep Giri, a socialist thinker and Congress leader will be cremated today. Giri, who had throat cancer, died at 9:30 p.m. while receiving treatment at Mediciti Hospital.

According to Congress, Giri’s body will be kept at the hospital’s Shivalaya temple from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., after which it will be taken to the party office. Giri, who was born in 2004 in Bastipur, Siraha, to father Mitralal Giri and mother Punyaprabha Giri, holds a master’s degree in philosophy and economics from India Jawaharlal Nehru University. Even those who adhere to other political ideologies admire Giri, who has cultivated the image of an intellectual leader despite his long tenure in the Nepali Congress.
Giri, who has closely followed all of Nepal’s political movements, is also a friend of the Congress’s founding leader, BP Koirala. He has been involved in parliamentary politics since 2051 but was defeated in the 2056 elections. Giri, who served in the Constituent Assembly of 2064 and 2070 as a proportional member of parliament, won the election directly in 2074. But Giri, who was an MP several times, never became a minister and never aspired to be one.
Giri, who is interested in studies, research and writing, has published more than a dozen books on subjects including Lelin’s biography, women, Marxism and economics.
