KATHMANDU: The CPN (Maoist Center) has yet to elect a central office bearer six months after the convention.

The Maoist Standing Committee meeting, which has been taking place for the past few days in order to finalize the party’s organizational structure, including the officials, is becoming inconclusive.

The Maoist leaders have admitted that meetings and discussions will take place, but no office bearers have been announced as they were unable to reach an agreement.

According to the leaders, the struggle within the party over the selection of the general secretary has intensified. Standing committee members Varshman Pun and Janardan Sharma are said to be competing for the position of general secretary.

Except for the chairperson, the Maoists were unable to elect office bearers at their eighth congress last Poush (Dec/Jan).

The 41-member Standing Committee, the 125-member Politburo, and the 375-member Central Committee were all finalized at a meeting a few days ago.

The Thursday morning meeting to finalize the organizational structure, including the officers, was rescheduled for 4 p.m. The meeting was rescheduled for 6 p.m. because it could not be held at 4 p.m.

As the House of Representatives continued to debate and vote on the Citizenship Bill, the meeting was adjourned until this morning as the top leaders and other members of the standing committee were busy.

The meeting at the party’s central office in Parisdanda on Friday morning was also inconclusive in terms of selecting office bearers. Leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara insisted that the meeting tomorrow at 1 p.m. would give the officials the final form.

“The standing committee meeting was held today, and there was a detailed discussion on the issues of office bearers and party program,” he said, adding that there are no remaining issues of discussion regarding the office bearers, and that “it will be decided tomorrow afternoon at 1 o’clock.”

He stated that the selection of office bearers was the subject of heated debate within the party. “It doesn’t mean that office bearers couldn’t be chosen because of the controversy,” said leader Mahara. “There was a detailed and serious discussion about the selection of office bearers and the program,” he added. “Now there are no issues left to discuss; tomorrow’s meeting at 1 p.m. will finalize it.”
