KATHMANDU: According to the Nepal Panchang Judging Committee, this year’s Janai Purnima and Gai Jatra will take place on the same day, Friday.

The Kathmandu Valley’s Newar community initially stated that Janai Purnima and Gai Jatra would be held on two consecutive days, Thursday and Friday, respectively, but the Panchang Committee clarified in a press release that both will be held on August 12, i.e. Friday.

The Panchang Committee has asked that no one be confused about it, and that all religious activities be held on the same day, Friday, in accordance with religion and tradition.

According to the Panchang Committee, even though Purnima Tithi begins on Thursday as Bhadra falls on Thursday, it is appropriate to celebrate Janai Purnima and perform Raksha Bandhan the following day.

According to the committee, the situation was similar in 1994, 2024, 2030, 2031, 2055, 2061, and 2070, when Janai Purnima and Gai Jatra were celebrated on the same day. In addition, Janai Purnima and Gai Jatra have fallen on the same day for the first time in nearly 9 years.
