KATHMANDU: The 40th Memorial Day is being observed across the country to commemorate the contribution of the country’s first elected Prime Minister, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala (BP).

Koirala, who worked tirelessly to establish democracy in Nepal, died on 2039 BS Shrawan 6 (July 21, 1982).

He also made significant contributions to Nepali literature. Koirala was born on BS Bhadra 24 in 1971. (8 September 1914). Following the 2015 parliamentary elections, he became the first elected Prime Minister in Jestha 2016 BS.

Later, in 2017 BS, the then-king Mahendra deposed him and brought him to Sundarijal jail, where he was imprisoned.

The then-majority Congress government was deposed. King Mahendra established the country’s independent Panchayat system.

Along with BP, the Sundarijal Jail also housed Ganeshman Singh, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, Ramnarayan Mishra, Diwan Singh Rai, and Yogendraman Sherchan.

Except for ‘Doshi Chasma,’ BP wrote all of his literary works while imprisoned. BP was exiled to India after spending 9 years of his life here.

This prison has now been turned into a BP museum. Items used by the BP while imprisoned, aircraft hijacked by the Nepali Congress in 2030 BS, tanks and weapons used by the Congress during the armed struggle, and the BP’s private motor are kept here.
