Blitz Media Pvt. Ltd., in collaboration with Humanity United, disseminated “Research studies on Labour Migration in Nepal 2022” at a Kathmandu event attended by representatives from the government, embassies, INGOs, experts, the media, and other stakeholders.
“This research is based on the data and stories of people rather than the government or other institutions,” said Mr. Mahendra Pandey, Senior Manager of Humanity United. And this study will help us look at labor migration from a different perspective.”
Ms. Sushma Baral, a migrant worker who has been working in Kuwait for the last eight years, shared her experience as a labor migrant as well as the efforts of the Shramik Sanjaal Facebook group of labor migrants.
Dr. Deepak Kafle, representing the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Security, emphasized the need for more research of this type while also highlighting the ministry’s efforts for Nepalese labor migrants.
Dr. Ganesh Gurung, the first person to earn a Ph.D. in migrant issues, cited labor migrants as true heroes in averting Nepal’s economic disaster. “Every day, 1721 youths travel to the Middle East, Malaysia, and other countries, sending more than 270 crores,” he said. With its rich data, broad scope, and numerous recommendations, the report can assist in addressing various labor migration challenges.”
Similarly, Dr. Ram Kumar Phuyal, a National Planning Commission member, praised the report for its large sample size and data-rich approach. He suggested that future research look at the issues from the employer’s perspective. He also stated that this report will be used for evidence-based planning in the preparation of the 16th National Plan.
Finally, Mr. Gokarna Bista, Member of Parliament and former Minister of Labour, Employment, and Social Security, emphasized how important quality research like this was when he was in the ministry. He cited the report’s various strengths and hoped that it would help improve government policies. He also asked researchers and experts to thoroughly examine the report and make policymakers aware of migrant labor-friendly policies.
The study delves into three different research topics that affect the Nepali migrant population and their families: the dynamics of foreign migrations, the financial and emotional liabilities of the migrants, and the challenges of reintegration once they return. It then examines the current role of local governments in promoting safer migration and concludes with recommendations to various labor migration stakeholders.
The research was carried out throughout Nepal, with different methodologies used for different segments of the study. A total of 4046 in-person surveys were conducted to analyze the behavior cycle of labor migrants seeking foreign employment. For the socioeconomic impact of foreign employment in Nepal, 40 focus group discussions (FGDs) and 140 in-depth interviews were conducted. Finally, 28 in-depth interviews were conducted to assess the effectiveness of the Local Government’s Foreign Employment mandate.
Among a large sample size it is hoped that this research will generate additional discourse, discussions, and contributions on labor migration issues in the country, paving the way for safer migration in the future and the well-deserved dignity of Nepali migrant workers.
