KATHMANDU: Today, on Ashadh Shukla Purnima, Gayatri, Diksha, Veda Mantra recitation, and Guru Purnima are celebrated by paying homage to the Gurus (teachers).

The words ‘Gu’ and ‘Ru’ mean darkness and light, respectively. The person who destroys the darkness of ignorance with the light of knowledge is mentioned in Tantrashastra and Dharmashastra.

Guru is a person who destroys darkness and spreads light in life. Our scriptures regard such scriptures as Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar.

The Guru, like the parents, is regarded as a deity and is referred to as ‘Acharya Devo Bhava.’ On this day, various schools and organizations have organized programs to pay homage to the Guru who imparts education and initiation.

We have included a picture of Guru Purnima, which was celebrated by the students of Shree Kanti Bhairav Gurukul in Gokarneshwar Municipality, Kathmandu. On the occasion of Bhanu Jayanti, they recited Bhanubhakta’s poems in addition to Guru Purnima.
